Názov prednášky: The mental perception of our geographical position in Europe: What do we think about the geographical concepts of Carpathian Basin, Danube-Basin, Pannonian Basin, Central Europe?
Anotácia prednášky:

The geographical unity of the Carpathian Basin is an unequivocal phenomenon for Hungarian people. This is the consequence of our geographic position, history and our knowledge acquired in school and life. These components together constitute our so called “mental map” which is a virtual space coming into existence in our mind. This map helps us to orientate ourselves in the world, form our opinions and develop our relationships.

Our research tries to compare the neighbouring people, communities’ and political actors’ mental map developed in connection with our common territory, the Carpathian Basin. We aim to reveal the similar and dissimilar features of these maps and we wish to examine how these elements affect our common development in the future. We wish to investigate what kind of new political concepts of space came into existence during the changes of the 90’s (variations of “mental map”), how internal political spaces have been transformed in these countries (administrative boundaries, the spatial divisions of electoral results, etc.) and how these affect our co-operation.

In our research we wish to explore the old and new spatial views, to see in what political and spatial categories the neighbour states think in, and how they relate themselves to these; how they see and how they transform their inner structures; and what impacts it has on the possibilities of political and development cooperation in the Carpathian Basin. Our activity is thus at the boundary of political geography and regional science, also using the methodology of administrative and election geography and mental mapping.
